Chat Features
Explore Ryokan's chat features: regenerate AI responses, edit messages, branch stories into new chats, and organize your conversations.
Ryokan includes several features that give you more control over your interactive stories. You can regenerate responses, edit messages, explore alternative storylines, and organize your conversations.
Regenerating AI Responses
If you're not happy with an AI response, select Retry to generate a new one.
Ryokan keeps previous response variants. Use the arrows below the latest AI response to switch between them without losing earlier versions.
This lets you explore different reactions or developments before deciding which response you want to continue with.
On desktop, you can also use your keyboard's arrow keys, as long as you're not editing a text field.
Editing Messages
Select Edit to change your latest message.
After saving your changes, Ryokan removes the messages that followed it and generates a new AI response based on your updated input.
This is useful when you want to reconsider a decision or approach a scene differently.
You can also edit AI messages directly. Doing so changes the existing text without automatically generating another response.
Note: If you want to preserve your current storyline, consider creating a new chat from an earlier point instead.
New Chat from Here
New chat from here allows you to branch your story at an earlier point.
Select an AI message and choose the corresponding action. Ryokan creates a separate conversation containing the history up to that point.
Your original conversation remains unchanged.
For example, you can explore two different decisions and continue both storylines independently.
Organizing Your Chats
Your saved conversations are available in the sidebar.
From there, you can:
- Rename, pin, or delete chats.
- Create, rename, and delete folders.
- Move and reorder chats using drag and drop.
- Reopen previous stories whenever you like.
On desktop, chat actions are available through the context menu. On Android, you can access them by long-pressing a chat.
Importing and Exporting Chats
You can export singleplayer conversations as Ryokan JSON files. Open a chat's action menu and select Export chat.
The exported file contains the conversation history and other supported information, including response variants and the associated character context.
To restore an exported conversation, select Import chat from the sidebar's management menu.
Important: Chat exports are not full application backups. API keys, provider connections, and general settings are not included.
Additional Features
While the AI is generating a response, you can cancel it using the stop button.
The information icon in the chat header also provides access to character details and conversation statistics, such as message counts and regenerated responses.
Your singleplayer conversations are stored locally on your device.
